Another Not Huge Day :-)

We got a pretty late start due to drying out the tent, lots of traffic much of the night including a jet medevac that pulled up right next to us with the light flashing ambulance, then they refueled which all took from 3-4 AM. The patient was fine (complicated baby delivery we heard later), and I had to troubleshoot the intermittent start problem.
I spent some time looking for a mechanic, which I found, and a solenoid to buy and take with me, which I did not.
Luckily I found a broken wire when I pulled the cowl, so I was pretty happy. I forced ten bucks on the mechanic that put a new terminal on the wire for me...

All done and working!

We ran on down to Grande Prairie. It was more wind than I like and a direct x-wind because the runway I wanted was closed... but I had some ideas the tower wasn't buying...
"How about I use 25 at my own risk?"
"No"
"Can I land on that grass by 30?" long silence and lots of stammering then
"No one's ever done that..."
So I sucked it up and it wasn't as bad as I thought. I was working pretty hard but didn't hit the aileron stops.
We bought some gas and left the plane at the FBO.

The FBO told us the 737 behind us hit three seagulls on final, but I hadn't seen any birds.
We walked over to the terminal to look for lunch and Flight Service talked me out of going further South along the "front range" today so instead of lunch we got a shuttle to a Holiday Inn hoping it will settle down some tomorrow.
I was filling out my logbook and showed Jake a disturbing trend in our daily progress :-)

More weather holds

We waited around Whitehorse (and got a call from my friend Greg who was there on floats - small world) for the weather to clear to Watson lake for a few hours and left when it looked like it was improving, a few rain showers but ceilings were fine. It has been non-stop chop to light all the time :-(

Watson Lake

Trip photographer at work (these will be great black and whites).

We decided at Watson Lake not to chance forecast severe turbulence in the trench, so headed to Ft. Nelson for the long way around. Ft. St. John had gusts to 30 so we held up here until tommorrow, and John looks to be laying down as forecast.

We have an intermittent starter solenoid (I think), so I'll see if I can find one tomorrow (not likely) or clean the contacts on the existing one.

There are a lot of helicopters here; a few of these...

are doing crew changeout at shale gas sites that are only a few minutes away. We're taking showers at a "crew shack" where we bought gas. Real nice people - they left us a truck we're going to use to look for good coffee in the morning.

Slight delay at the starting gate

Fog at Tazlina (between us and Gulkana) all day yesterday...

Same view this morning....

But Tahneta (just E of Palmer) closed now.... arrgh.

Finally opened up and we made it to Whitehorse. Jake did a great job with tent in a pretty stiff breeze.

Good campground - view of the ramp...

And a shelter to cook in.

Southbound 2011

In a day or two Jake and I will depart for F70, French Valley (Temecula, CA) in the 180. I say "the 180" as if there might be a Citation or Socata option :-). We have about 23 days before I need to be back at work so are going to take our time as much as my 'target fixation' will allow. This is our expected, general, route...

Weather, stamina and interest permitting of course. We only have a couple plans: clear US Customs at a grass strip in a hop field in ID (Eckhart International), camp at an Idaho fly-in lakefront campground (Cavanaugh Bay), visit Jake's Grandpa in Boise, visit my Great (in every sense) Uncle Burt and other friends in Paso Robles and aerial view the geoglyphs outside of Blythe, CA.

Alaska Range Tour

My Brother Robert had been wanting to go see the Revelation Mountains for some time.  I mentioned that I had wanted to look at the Cathedral Spires, which are fairly near Palmer - in the SW corner of Denali Park.  Somehow I got the two mixed together. I intended to fly over there (about an hour), look around, maybe pop through the Alaska Range to Farewell and then back to Talkeetna for lunch and home.

When I realized that the Revelations were the end of the Alaska Range (a couple hundred miles West of where I thought we were going),  I thought we'd have to do just one or the other.  After a quick look at the map, the internet for a restaurant and a call to make there was $9/G gas available in McGrath, I decided we could do both.

I flew from Palmer to Merrill to pick up Rob, then we flew NW to the Cathedral Spires, through the AK Range, along the Kuskokwim past Farewell and Nikolai to McGrath, then back south along the Big river into the Revelation Mountains, to Lake Clark and back through Lake Clark Pass.  Beautiful the entire way, here's the route:

North through the Susitna valley.

Denali in the distance.

Cathedral Spires coming up.

Spires; check out the finger-like extrusions just right of center.

Coming around the back side of the Spires.

Out of the AK Range, Farewell is just ahead on the left.

Down the Kuskokwim.  Didn't see any boats and just a few cabins.

Skirted Nikolai.

Turn left at Nikolai....

Coming up on McGrath.

I messed up my approach a bit, coming from the other direction I should have landed straight in on the gravel there on my left, but overflew and  went back to land the other way.  It's left traffic so you fly downwind over the paved runway which seemed odd to me. It does keep you out of the approach path, though.

Doesn't look like much, but the Iditarod Trail Cafe was just fine, cute waitress and right across from the plane parking.

Had some concern getting fuel in McGrath.  I had called ahead and asked, but it's the same fuel company in Palmer as in McGrath.  Some young guy on the phone told me "Sure, I'll be here and bring the truck around, just come find me by Forestry".
When we landed I asked some local where the gas was and he said there wasn't any.  I headed towards the Forestry office and couldn't find anyone. I got worried that I was accidentally talking to Palmer, not McGrath because they deliver fuel the same way there - go towards Forestry and find the guy with the truck.

Of course neither of my cell phones worked.  I was headed to the plane to get my Sat phone to call what I thought was the McGrath fuel guy when he showed up (had been at lunch) and everything worked out.  At 9 bucks a gallon.  :-)  And then of course someone calls on the radio and the FSS phones the fuel truck for him - should have tried THAT. :-)

Cute houses right across the street from the river.

Rob in the cemetery.

Dodged some minor squalls out of McGrath, up the Big River.

Up the Revelation Glacier...

Revelation Mountains.

Then back down the glacier and headed South to Lake Clark.

We didn't take any more photos - went back through Lake Clark pass (although it was clear and direct would have worked), then dropped Rob off at Merrill and headed home.
